Mathematics

At Sacred Heart, our Maths curriculum is carefully sequenced in small, progressive steps to ensure that all pupils develop a deep, secure understanding of key concepts. We aim to equip every child with the knowledge, fluency and problem-solving skills they need to thrive both in the wider curriculum and in their future lives. Through a mastery approach, rich vocabulary, practical resources and a focus on reasoning, all children, including those with SEND and the most disadvantaged, are given the opportunity to succeed. Confident, independent learners are developed through consistent challenge, high-quality teaching and a strong emphasis on mathematical thinking and communication.

Called To Change

“Mathematics helps us to see the order and beauty of God’s creation.”
We are proud to give our children the tools they need to succeed and grow in faith and knowledge.

Mastery Explained | NCETM

The Mathematics Curriculum:

We deliver Mathematics’ lessons using Classroom Secrets, which follows White Rose, and complement this with NCETM Mastering Number.

  • At Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality mathematics curriculum that nurtures curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving skills. Through Classroom Secrets, we seek to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, enabling every child to become fluent in number, reason mathematically, and apply their knowledge to real-life situations. Our approach reflects Gospel values by encouraging perseverance, collaboration, and respect for the God-given gift of learning.

  • Our aim in using NCETM’s Mastering Number alongside Classroom Secrets, is to give every child a strong foundation in number sense.  Through the NCETM Mastering Number programme, we help pupils understand numbers deeply, so they can use them confidently in everyday life and future learning.

  • The intent of the NCETM Mastering Number programme is to ensure pupils in Reception through to Year 5, develop a deep understanding of number relationships and fluency with numbers to 20. This underpins later success in mathematics and supports equity of access for all learners.

We follow the Classroom Secrets scheme to deliver a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge step by step. Lessons are structured to promote mastery, using concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations to ensure conceptual understanding. Teachers use small steps and varied practice to support all learners, including those who need additional help and those ready for greater challenge. Regular assessment and feedback guide progress, while opportunities for discussion and reasoning foster a growth mindset rooted in faith and resilience.

Alongside Classroom Secrets, using NCETM’s Mastering Number, we deliver

  • Daily sessions delivered alongside the main mathematics curriculum.
  • Structured teaching using NCETM resources and manipulatives to strengthen conceptual understanding.
  • Professional development for staff through NCETM guidance and collaborative planning.
  • Integration of Catholic values by fostering perseverance, curiosity, and respect for learning.

Through this approach, pupils develop secure mathematical foundations and confidence to tackle increasingly complex problems. They demonstrate fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills across all areas of mathematics. Our children leave each key stage prepared for the next, with a love of learning and the ability to see the beauty and order of God’s creation through mathematics. Success is measured not only by strong outcomes but by pupils’ enjoyment, engagement, and readiness to use maths in everyday life.

We use PUMA and practice SATS papers (in Class 6) to assess Maths termly.

We are part of the Mater Christi Trust and work closely with the Secondary schools in our family. We want to ensure that our children have a successful and positive transition between Key Stage 2 and 3 and are prepared for their adult life as well.

We ensure that they focus on developing their basic number skills so they can apply these confidently when problem solving which will serve them well in Key Stage 3.

We focus on their oracy skills through collaborative problem solving to ensure they have the vocabulary to express themselves and their answers. This also boots their confidence and communication skills which will help them when meeting new pupils in Year 7.

Their time at Primary school and preparation for SATS in Year 6, ensures that they are fluent in and have mastered the knowledge and skills needed for the Key Stage 2 curriculum and are ready for accessing the Key Stage 3 curriculum in depth.
