Welcome to the EYFS at Sacred Heart
Here at Sacred Heart we believe that young children learn best through child-centred and play based activities. Our Early Year team values working in partnership with parents and carers to ensure children get the best start on their learning journey.
Our Early Years Unit takes children from ages 2-5 years old. We have three classrooms designed and resourced appropriately for each age group to learn and explore through play. Our classes are St Peter (2 year old room), St Paul (3 year old room) and St Rose (Reception).
The Nursery classrooms share an outdoor area and the Reception class has its own outdoor area. We are passionate about learning in the outdoors where children can develop their skills through gross motor activities and messy play. We provide a sand and water tray area as well as a mud kitchen and our nursery outdoor area has a canopy which makes it ideal for the younger children to free flow play both inside and outside in all weather conditions.
EYFS Curriculum
The Early years team work closely together to ensure the progression of the children’s learning which are guided by Development Matters. Our topics are on a 2 year cycle so the learning is varied for all. Our curriculum covers all the prime and foundation areas of learning to help the children to work towards achieving their Early Learning Goals by the end of Reception. The children often come together for celebrations and special events as a unit and also with Key Stage 1 and 2.
Called to Change
Our learning is enquiry based just like in KS1 and KS2. When the children start a new topic we promote discussion through problem solving and open-ended questioning. This supports children with their speech and language as well as cognitive development. Our Called to Change questions link to the schools catholic ethos and mission “Love one another as I have loved you”.
